Fans Thrilled With Pair of Knicks Picks

Several of the top drafted players walked up to the stage, shook David Stern’s hand and then made their way to a one-on-one interview with ESPN. Shortly after, they were escorted out of the theatre and made their way towards the back of Madison Square Garden, walking past a countless number of fans wearing Knicks jerseys and a picture of Danilo Gallinari shaking the commissioner’s hand back in 2008.

Although the Knicks didn’t have a first-round pick this year, their presence was certainly felt at the 2010 NBA Draft. And the fans were still extremely excited to see the Knicks add a pair of promising second-round picks – guard Andy Rautins from Syracuse and swingman Landry Fields from Stanford – to a young roster that includes Gallinari, Toney Douglas, Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry and Bill Walker.

The Garden crowd went nuts when NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the Knicks were on the clock following the Milwaukee Bucks’ pick at 37. Things got even crazier when Rautins name was called despite the patient fans waiting over three hours for their hometown team to make its first pick. Two minutes later, Fields also received a very positive reaction from the die-hard fans.

“A fair amount of great players came out of the second round so it was exciting today to be here in anticipation of the newest Knicks picks,” said long-time Knicks fan Marija Kero of Astoria. “Andy Rautins, the sharp-shooter from Syracuse, is an exciting addition to the team. It’ll be great to have another outside scoring threat. And I’m looking forward to learning more about Fields.”

Neither Rautins nor Fields was in attendance. But both players will soon meet with their new team and be introduced to the New York media. They will most likely make their first on-court appearances in the blue and orange when the Knicks participate in the NBA Summer League next month in Las Vegas.

Despite the usual trade rumors that typically surround every team in the NBA on draft day, the Knicks didn’t make any moves, opting to remain in their two original draft positions. It appears to be a good thing that the Knicks stayed put. Without sacrificing cap space entering the free agency period, the Knicks were able to fill two of their biggest needs in the second round. Rautins, considered one of the best shooters in the entire draft, is the type of guard Coach Mike D’Antoni loves and will fit in nicely alongside Douglas. Fields is a versatile forward who is is effective on both sides of the floor.

It’s safe to say all the fans, at least the ones at the draft, were pleased with the most recent moves. And the Knicks are just getting started filling out their roster for next season.
