Rocky and Bernie rappel in downtown Denver to raise money for cancer research

Sight-Seeing: Nuggets, Avs mascots go 'Over The Edge'

A mountain lion and a St. Bernard rappelling down a 30-story building in downtown Denver.

Yeah, that seems about right.

Nuggets supermascot Rocky and Colorado Avalanche mascot Bernie rappelled in tandem down the side of 1600 Glenarm Place on Friday as part of an annual fundraiser for the Cancer League of Colorado.

In all, about 150 people were scheduled to take part in the two-day "Over The Edge" event.

“A lot of people don’t know about our organization,” said Cancer League of Colorado president Gary Reece. “It’s terrific for us to have (the mascots) here because they give us great exposure. People want to call and donate.”

For the privilege of dropping 367 feet down the side of a building, each participant collected a least $1,000 in sponsor donations. The event raised about $185,000 last year, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting cancer research and patient-related services in Colorado.

Nuggets coach George Karl is an active member of the Cancer League of Colorado. Karl had prostate cancer surgery in 2005 and survived head and neck cancer in 2010.

Founded in 1969, the Cancer League of Colorado is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that has awarded more than $10 million in research grants and service awards over the past 26 years. All operating expenses are covered by membership dues and a staff of more than 400 volunteers. For more information about how to donate, visit www.cancerleague.org.
